At Krispy Kreme, Daly City

Doughnuts are a scary indulgence, but sometimes nothing goes better with a cup of coffee than a fresh-out-of-the fryer glazed doughnut from Krispy Kreme.

I've often wondered, why do coffee and doughnuts go so well together? Is it because a strong brew can cut through the fat and sugar? Is it the contrast in textures—hot liquid with crispy on the outside soft in the inside pastry? Perhaps Bread coffee chocolate yoga can solve that mystery?

When I was back home on Maui last December, there was a clock in the middle of Kahului counting down the days when the first Krispy Kreme in Hawai'i was to open. That's what all of my friends kept talking about—how excited they were to finally have this famous doughnut shop in their sunny environs. I'm sure glad I wasn't there for the grand opening. Two words: Mob scene.
My first bite into a glazed Krispy Kreme doughnut was back in New York. There was a tiny shop on 8th Street near NYU that dished them out fresh. Soon after, many more branches opened up, and Krispy Kreme became a staple at work meetings and functions. They were so ubiquitous that I began to tire of them. After all, nothing is worse than a donut that's been sitting in a box for several hours. Because of their frequent appearance, and soggy blandness, I stopped eating them for several years.

But recently, my companion and I had a sudden craving. We ventured to the closest Krispy Kreme branch in the San Francisco Bay Area, on a busy corner in Daly City. The line was long, with families purchasing boxes of assorted doughnuts, nearby construction workers out for a late weekend breakfast, and couples like us who just wanted a taste. We got a tall cup of their smooth, mild and mellow coffee, which actually wasn't so bad (I'm quite a snob about the kinds of coffee I drink). In addition to the regular glazed doughnut, we got a chocolate iced custard filled, glazed sour cream, and a glazed creme filled. We got them to go, opting to eat outside in the sudden-and-rare Bay Area sun. The doughnuts were heavenly, nothing like the sad, old Krispy Kremes I had at functions in New York. We devoured each one, and although each had its own unique flavor and quality, the best is still the regular glazed version. There were many other doughnut varieties available, including an apple pie doughnut that was the flavor-of-the-month (sounds scary), caramel kreme crunch and New York cheesecake. But in my opinion, doughnuts should be simple at best. None of these fancy toppings and fillings that convert them into a different dessert—that sort of defeats the whole doughnut eating experience. Guess I'm a doughnut purist...
Krispy Kreme even has a fundraising program that allows organizations and schools to sell their doughnuts to raise needed funds. Move over Girl Scouts...
And if you're still hungry, right next to the shop is an In-N-Out Burger joint to satisfy any animal-style burger urges. See, Daly City is not quite the culinary wasteland that it's often thought to be.

Creen,
I love the classic glazed at Krispy Kreme! They go well with a nice cup of coffee. The cream filled is quite nice as well...
In-N-Out and Krispy Kreme? You must be kidding. Heavenly!

Great photos! I'm glad they did something with that defunct little corner of DC. But who woulda thought it would become the oasis that it is? A double-double and a dozen donuts in one stop.

I really love the Krispy and Kreme donuts! We always buy some when going to Costco Wholesale. But the problem is that they are alittle to epensive. Especially the box with the different kinds of donuts.
And I would like to give a suggestion if you can make a Krispy and Kreme shop in Livingston or Merced California
Thank you
